LADISMITH: Massive lucerne farming enterprise of note.

This 8,192-hectare lucerne producing farming enterprise is situated in the beautiful and scenic valley on the R323 where the Grootrivier, Knuyriver and the Touwsriver meet. It is situated 30 kilometers from Ladismith, 65 kilometers from Riversdale,190 kilometers from George Airport and 310 kilometers from Cape Town Airport. Ladismith is the closest town with a very vibrant, inviting and friendly community. Medi-Clinic and schools you can find in Oudtshoorn, Riversdale, Mosselbay and George. The tar roads to and the gravel roads on the farm is in good condition and well maintained.

The area is well known for its high quality lucerne production. Meadow Feeds is the next-door neighbour which allows for quick and easy delivery. Currently 575 hectares is used for lucerne production. Flood irrigation under garavity is used, water is supplied from numerous sources namely; Floriskraal Dam, Grootriver, Knuyriver, Touwsriver and the water rights is registered with the Buffelsrivier water scheme. The farm has abundance of water storage capacity, when all the dams are full most of the farm can be irrigated twice. The lucerne beds originate from 1995 – 2000. Regular laser levelling of the beds has been done. Sandy loam soil is the dominant soil type on this farm. The outfield is currently utilized as grazing for goats (1,000 ewes) and cattle (300 cattle). Another addition to the outfield is the capacity to feed and grow 14,000 ostriches. Camps and infrastructure are not in use at the moment. The average rainfall for the region is 300mm – 350mm per annum.

In this region you can expect to yield 12 - 15 tons of lucerne per hectare per year. Current winter prices per ton is R5,000. Lucerne seed production can vary from 300kg – 500kg per hectare with a current price of R130 per kg. Normal season will be 6 cuts per year with 1 seed harvest. With good rains the possibility is there to do another 2 cuts in the winter for silage.

• Water from boreholes is only for domestic use and livestock
• Another 2 dams are used, i.e. at the Meadow factory and the earth dam on the neighbour’s farm
• Types of irrigation: Flood irrigation, but also hectares with underground drippers
• Reeds in the low-lying river swamps are burnt in August, this supply ample feed for cattle

• In winter 1 - 2 cuts for silage, depending on rain and temperatures
• 12 – 15 tonnes per year per hectare
• Price in winter for lucerne is R5,000 per tonne
• Irrigation field beds for planting are ± 250 m in length and 40 metre wide
• Expenses equal ± ⅓ of income
