LADISMITH: Gravity feed productive lucerne farming enterprise of note.

This 4070-hectare lucerne producing farming enterprise is situated in the beautiful and scenic valley on the R323 where the Groot River, Knuy River and the Touws River meet. It is situated 40 kilometres from Ladismith, 70 kilometres from Riversdale,195 kilometres from George Airport and 335 kilometres from Cape Town Airport. Van Wyksdorp is just around the corner from the farm, but Ladismith is the closest town with a vibrant, inviting and friendly community. Medi-Clinic and schools are in Oudtshoorn, Riversdale, Mosselbay and George. The tarred roads to and the gravel roads on the farm is in good condition and well maintained.

The area is well known for its high quality lucerne production. With Meadow Feeds not too far away it allows for quick and easy delivery. Currently 275 hectares are used for lucerne production. The lucerne pastures originate from 1995 – 2000. Regular laser levelling of the beds has been done.

Gravity flood irrigation is used, and water is supplied from numerous sources namely; Floriskraal Dam, Groot River, Knuy River and the Touws River and all water rights is registered with the Buffels Rivier Water Scheme. The farm has abundance of water storage capacity, when all the dams are full most of the farm can be irrigated twice. The lucerne beds originate from 1995 – 2000. Regular laser levelling of the beds has been done. Sandy loam soil is the dominant soil type on this farm. The outfield is currently utilized as grazing for goats (1,000 ewes) and cattle (300 cattle). The average rainfall for the region is 300mm – 350mm per annum.

In this region one can expect to a yield of 12 - 15 tonnes of lucerne per hectare per year. Current winter price per tonne is R5,000. Lucerne seed production can vary from 300kg – 500kg per hectare with a current price of R130 per kg. Normal season will be 6 cuts per year with 1 seed harvest. With good rains another 2 cuts are possible in winter, for silage.

• Types of irrigation: Flood irrigation is applied, but some hectares have underground drippers irrigation
• Reeds in the low-lying river swamps are burnt in August. These reeds supply ample feed for cattle

Lucerne:
• 6 cuts per year
• 1 cut for seed
• In winter 1 - 2 cuts for silage, depending on rain and temperatures
