CALEDON / GREYTON: Abundance of water and quality soil
Situated on the southern slopes of the Riviersonderend mountain range, this 118-hectare irrigation farming enterprise is blessed with a diverse topography which ranges from high mountains, secluded valleys, 3 waterfalls and 48.8-hectare arable land.
The peat and loamy soil are about 1,5 metre deep. The soil, water and climate are suitable for the production of quality citrus, blueberries, and deciduous fruit.
Unpolluted water is obtained from a perennial mountain stream high up in the mountain from where it is piped, and gravity fed into an 88,000-cub metre elevated earth storage dam. If needed, an artesian borehole with a capacity of 55,000-litre per hour is also available to pump into the mentioned dam.
Irrigation water from the Theewater irrigation scheme is pumped for a distance of 300-metre from the perennial Riviersonderend river to an earth dam situated on an elevated area on the southern section of the farm.
The dams, as well as all other water sources, are duly registered with the Department of Water Affairs.
Take note that the 48.8-hectare of irrigation acreage are irrigated by gravity fed permanent sprinklers. This is an enormous electricity and labour cost saver.
During the hot summer months, about 15 hectare of maize is planted, harvested, and stored as silage. About 1,000 tons of silage is produced annually.
Currently the farming enterprise consists of a lucrative organic weaner growing and fattening farming enterprise on pastures. The carrying capacity is about 300 weaners. Weaners are bought and sold on a monthly basis. Various inner-camps are properly planned and the water supply is meaningfully spread over the farm for efficient fodder utilization.
The farming infrastructure for a farm of this nature is good. In the mountainous areas the scenery and waterfalls are unbelievable. Different fynbos species are also found on the higher lying areas and some of the valleys are undisturbed fynbos veldt.
The cattle handling facilities and feedlot are in good repair.
It has numerous buildings, including a sound main homestead situated in a lush garden, as well as a newly renovated cottage with modern finishes. There is a shed and another storage building.
The farming enterprise is located only 10 km from the quaint town of Greyton, which was recently declared the 2021 town of the year by the KykNet TV programme Kwela. It is situated adjacent to the small settlement Bereaville.
Farms of this nature are seldom offered for sale and this farm offers the opportunity to an economically feasible farming operation and lends itself to the production of various quality agricultural products.
Bearing in mind its excellent location; the ambiance from the elevated position; safe and secure location, while being relatively close to all amenities, it is quite different from what you would expect from this part of the Greyton district!
The farm is for sale as a going concern at R21 million, including various vehicles, tractors, and farming equipment.
This farming enterprise is marketed by a dual mandate together with Dawie Snyman of REDZ.
